Essence of Place, Stephen Turner

Acting as Perfumier to the wood, Stephen Turner has attempted to refine an ‘Essence of Place’ from its living flora creating a new and affirmative spirit of the wood and embodiment of living nature in a world where many are disconnected from its meaning.
Through a rigorous method of olfactory exploration identifying and gathering flowers to then distill their aromatic oils, Turner has captured a crucial aspect of the 'sense landscape' that constitutes Duke's Wood seeking to 'infuse the process with a respect for the objectivity of chemistry, but valuing more the alchemical, subjective and emotional nature of each experience.'  This careful and methodical working process acknowledges the utilitarian industrial operations of the sites past whilst ‘offering a contrasting reminder of the stark realities of global oil demand and the continuing pressure on nature and on our sense of belonging to the world.’
